Ah, Crap!
You have finally decided to go outside and do some backyard cleaning and... what's that? Of course, those dang birds again! Bird poop everywhere. It's time to get serious. You see some stones laying around. You pick them up and start throwing them at the birds like there's no tomorrow.
This project consumed roughly 75% of the submission time and 8 hours of gameplay for fine-tuning, bug hunting and procrastinating :) sadly, there's no highscore leaderboard, this will be featuring online scores in the near future.
There's no real goal. You have to keep the place clean for as long as you can, trying to get rid of the birds. It's their yard now - the Crapyard. It's based heavily on focus - if you have played Icy Tower, you know how important it is to stay focused as much as possible.
The game has two modes: Normal and Hardcore
- Normal mode - the birds are slow, this mode should be treated as a tutorial
- Hardcore mode - good practice required, the birds are twice as fast, powering-up for the throw takes less time. The real fun starts in this mode. There is a secret phase switch after killing 500 birds.
Heads-up
- the game takes at least 30 minutes of practice in order to enter the hardcore mode and actually have fun.
- if you are using multiple monitors and playing the WebGL version, be careful to not click offscreen, because WebGL does not allow locking the cursor in the browser window, even in fullscreen. Download the standalone version for that.
Controls:
- A: Left
- D: Right
- Mouse: move change the direction
- Left Click: Throw (hold for more power)
General tips:
- play in fullscreen for maximum efficiency
- throw stones in the sky when there are no birds visible for a brief moment, you might get a hit if you are lucky
- stones will have a bigger bounce from the left wall
- when birds stop near the walls, aim at the wall first for more points (ricochet trigger)
- try to memorize which bird appeared first - killing the birds in specific order prevents getting more poop on your yard
Mechanics:
- you have 2% chance to spawn a Pickup upon killing a bird (additional +1% for multikill and +1% for a hit from higher distance - roughly more than half of the playfield)
- birds will get faster after 100 kills (capped at 5 levels, 50% faster in Normal, 25% faster in Hardcore)
- stones are affected by the gravity and the force you put in the throw, so precision is the key.
- the yard has 100HP, decreasing by 1 with each poop
- the music gets slightly faster when yard's HP gets lower
- you can catch the poop to buy some extra time
- birds take a crap every 5-7 seconds, make sure to kill them fast
- fully charged throw takes around 0.8s on normal mode (0.4s on Hardcore mode)
- stones can bounce off the wall/tree
- there are always three birds
- birds will fly randomly (their speed is increased on Hardcore mode)
- you have 5 seconds to hit another bird to keep the combo going
- hitting a bird with the stone spawns a new bird
- (fixed) there was an unintended behavior when two stones hit a bird the same exact frame, spawning an additional bird. It was extremely difficult, but possible. It has been removed to keep the game difficulty unchanged
Scoring:
The scoring is pretty simple. There is a base score of 5. The base score is multiplied by the achieved Combo and an additional multiplier that consists of:
- 2x for a ricochet
- 2x if the stone is falling with high velocity
- number of Birds hit by one stone
- distance between the point where the stone has been thrown and the end point (when the bird got hit)
Example: the player has 285 combo, the stone has bounced off the wall, is falling and hit three birds and the result distance is 4 units
5 * (285 * 2 * 2 * 3 * 4) = 68400pts.
Multikill is triggered when the same stone hits another bird, so according to the formula, the player earns a total score of 22640 + 45440 + 68400 points (a rough estimate). The formula will be changed in the near future.
Unavailable feature:
Due to the lack of time, the game will be missing a Tasks feature. Mini quests for extra score.
Have fun!
